Lancaster Arts are excited to welcome quartet, Ensemble Échappée, for an evening of music from composers unafraid to rip up the rule book, perfect for our theme of Dissent. Dissonance is a word that conjures up disagreeable discord, but behind this negative connotation, dissonance is the key to music's ability to move us. Without the emotional tension of dissonance, there would be no pull on our heartstrings.
This evening’s programme features Webern's fleeting Bagatelles, which were described by his teacher Arnold Schoenberg as "a novel in a single gesture, joy in a single breath". The programme continues with Kreisler's rarely heard String Quartet. Mozart, Kreisler, and Webern all use dissonance to communicate complex human feelings.
Ensemble Échappée was founded to explore the layers of music-making that exist beyond written notation. It is the initiative of violinist and Artistic Director Jenna Sherry, previously founder and Artistic Director of Birdfoot Festival.
