Lancaster to Heysham - Walks with Stories
Heysham to Lancaster via fieldsWalk reproduced by kind permission of Lancaster City Museum. Discover more inspiring 'Walks with Stories' on their Facebook page.
Distance: 4 miles (2 - 2.5 hour walk)
Accessibility: A flat walk across a mixture of footpaths and fields and through a working farmyard. The route crosses farmland which can be very muddy and frequently contains livestock- please keep any animals on leads.
*At this time, please only do these walks if National Restrictions allow and they are your local area too*

1. Starting on Meldon Road
take the lane towards fields between Edgecott Close and Jenny Nook. Follow the lane over the railway bridge. Continue past Heysham Moss Nature Reserve on your right. See our previous walk here.
2. Pass the right turn off Clay Lane
(locally called Post Office Lane, which leads to the phone tower) and take the next turning to your right, which is marked with a public footpath sign, and walk through a field.
3. Cross a bridge over the dyke into a second field
Next you come to another bridge over the dyke and enter a field. Beware of the cows that are often in here - they can be very frisky. Next you come to the gate to Moss Side Farm which is firmly tied with many knots. Go through the farmyard and down Moss Lane passing North Farm. I photographed this walk one early spring morning and in picture seven you can see the sun just rising over North Farm.
4. Cross the Bay Gateway
and take the steps down on the other side from the road (these can be very overgrown in the summer months). Cross another field and you approach an embankment on the other side of which you will find the Lythe Bridge and the historic Golden Ball at Snatchems where in the past a ferryman could take you across the river.
Find out more about Snatchems here.
5. Take the cycle path
which goes behind Salt Ayre tip and alongside the river and then follow the cycle track all the way into Lancaster over the Millennium Bridge .
