A Day Exploring Lancaster
Start your day at the magnificent Lancaster Castle with a guided tour, and a visit to the newly opened Lancashire Police Museum (open Thursday and Friday).
Then visit Lancaster Priory, the Mother Church of the City of Lancaster and a place of worship since Saxon times. Its historic churchyard forms part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument site of the Roman settlement on Castle Hill.
Wander down into the city centre to browse the Outdoor Charter Market (open Wednesdays and Saturdays) or the Assembly Rooms Emporium (open Tuesdays - Saturdays), to find food, gifts, books, arts and crafts, plants and flowers, clothes and jewellery.
Or pay a visit to Lancaster's City Museum and find out all about the city through the ages - you might even come across a few surprises!
Grab a bite to eat at Atkinson’s Café inside the castle or The Printroom in the lovely Storey building, Thomas Storey's philanthropic 19th century vision for the promotion of art, science and literature.
Alternatively, head up to the Pavilion Café at Williamson Park for a tasty lunch with magnificent views of the Fylde Coast, Morecambe Bay and the Lake District fells and mountains.
Williamson Park is home to the iconic Ashton Memorial, commissioned by Lancaster industrialist Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife Jessy. Explore its 54 acres of beautiful parkland with enchanting woodland walks, then visit the beautiful Butterfly House, situated in an Edwardian Palm House and meet some of the friendly mini-beasts in the park’s Mini Zoo.
